Hanford Site Groundwater Remediation: Where We Are and Where We Are Going

Presented by Dyan Foss, PG, PMP

CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company
Vice President, Soil and Groundwater Remediation Project

Program Abstract

The Hanford Site Soil and Groundwater Remediation Project includes two key areas; The River Corridor and the Central Plateau. There are several ongoing remediation efforts within both areas. You will learn about these existing remediation systems and the new final pump and treat system addressing groundwater remediation in the 200-West Area of The Central Plateau.
This 200-West system just completed its 90% design review. The construction contractor has been hired. Construction is underway with completion scheduled for September 30, 2011. The goal is to obtain LEED certification for design and construction of the treatment system. LEED (Leadership in Energy& Environmental Design) criteria implements strategies aimed at improving performance across the following metrics: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emission reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Currently some of the pump and treat systems can process about 600 gallons per minute. The new 200-West system includes 20 extraction wells, 16 injection wells addressing eight contaminant of concern that were products of plutonium and uranium recovery processes. The system uses a combination of active pumping (25 years) and natural attenuation (125 years) to meet the cleanup requirements of aquifer unrestricted beneficial use in accordance with state and federal regulations. CH2M HILL is looking for opportunities to use or modify this system for remediation of other cleanup efforts as future groundwater remediation decisions are implemented.
A significant portion of these projects are supported through Recovery Act funding. CHPPRC received $1.3 Billion in funding. Ms. Foss will discuss the critical role these funds are playing in the cleanup process and the positive impacts they have had on job creation.
